Towards a stronger international role of the euro: Commission contribution to the European Council and the Euro Summit (13-14 December 2018)

The European Commission adopted its Communication "Towards a stronger international role of the euro".

In the wake of the crisis, Europe has taken determined action to increasingly make the euro a source of economic protection and empowerment. Strengthening the international role of the euro is both the logical continuation of and a new frontier in the Economic and Monetary Union overall agenda, developed over the past four years.
This will allow the EU to better protect its citizens and businesses, uphold its values and promote its interests. It will also make the international economy less vulnerable to shocks linked to a single dominant currency and support a balanced, rules-based international political and economic order.
