After graduating from the ESIT translation school (Paris) in 1987, Nicolas Froeliger worked as a translator and head of the Parisian Architexte translation company for 17 years. He started teaching technical translation in 1992 and went on to become a professor in translation studies in 2014. He has been head, and then co-head, of the ILTS (Language industries and specialised translation) Master’s degree at Université Paris Diderot (now Université Paris Cité) since 2006. After a PhD in American Literature (on Thomas Pynchon’s novels, 1995), he directed his research towards the specific methods of pragmatic translation, which led him to write about 80 papers plus a book, Les Noces de l'analogique et du numérique – De la traduction pragmatique (Les Belles lettres, 2013). In 2007, he also founded the ‘Traductologie de plein champ’ (Field-grown translation studies) conferences, whose aim is to bring together professional translators, trainers, researchers and students, on translation-related topics of common interest, with nine editions organised so far. He is also co-director of the Centre d’études de la traduction (Center for Translation Studies) at Institut des humanités de Paris, vice-president (and former president) of the Association française des formations universitaires aux métiers de la traduction (French association for university training in translation), and served as a member of the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) board from 2019 to 2024.
