The EU has marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with a rallying call by the High Representative and Vice-President of the European Union. As he points out, the fight against racism continues to this day, undermining the very fabric of our peaceful and democratic societies.
In Europe, discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin is unequivocally prohibited. Despite this, recent reports from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights reveal distressing levels of such discrimination.
We are trying to change this. It is an ongoing struggle, but one we must remain committed to if we are truly to achieve our Union’s motto of being ‘United in diversity’.
That is why we have an EU Anti-racism Action Plan 2020-2025. Why we are putting in place rules to strengthen equality bodies. Why we are supporting national anti-racism plans. And why we are addressing structural racism in all relevant areas.
On this day, let us renew our collective commitment to eradicate racism in all its forms.
