Four topics for applications opened today: two in the areas of sustainable food and better-known oceans, and two in the area of empowering citizens to move to climate neutral Europe. All four are part of the European Green Deal call. The deadline to apply is 26 January. Applicants can attend a virtual Info Day tomorrow and a brokerage event on Thursday.
The topic on ‘Testing and demonstrating systemic innovations in support of the Farm-to-Fork Strategy’ (LC-GD-6-1-2020) aims to support innovative solutions to achieve climate neutral food systems. Proposals should tackle one of these challenges: increase farm-based carbon sequestration and storage; increase food businesses energy efficiency; reduce the dependence on hazardous pesticides in agriculture and on antimicrobials in animal production and in aquaculture; reduce food losses and waste; and help society to shift to sustainable healthy diets. The budget available for this topic is €72 million.
The topic on ‘Transparent & Accessible Seas and Oceans: Towards a Digital Twin of the Ocean’ (LC-GD-9-3-2020) aims to support the observation and collection of knowledge that help to create a digital copy of the ocean. This would help to better predict and protect our seas and oceans. The budget available for this topic is €12 million.
The topic on ‘European capacities for citizen deliberation and participation for the Green Deal’ (LC-GD-10-1-2020) aims to promote ownership and engagement from people across Europe. Proposals should contribute to specific impacts including participatory identification of solutions contributing to the European Green Deal, and stronger trust in policy and science institutions among citizens on European Green Deal issues. The budget available for this topic is €10 million.
The topic of ‘Behavioural, social and cultural change for the Green Deal’ (LC-GD-10-2-2020) aims at achieving behaviour change at both individual and collective levels through research. The budget available for this topic is €10 million.
The deadline to submit project proposals is 26 January. Successful proposals will be informed by end of May 2021, and could start as from October 2021.
What are the requirements for participation?
- The consortium must contain at least three legal entities that are independent from each other
- Each of the three legal entities must be established in a different EU Member State or Horizon 2020 associated country.

Potential applicants can attend a virtual Info Day which will take place at the European Research and Innovation Days on 23 September at 14h00. Registration is open.
In addition, a brokerage event is foreseen in the programme, on 24 September as from 09h00. Applicants will have the opportunity to pitch their proposals. Applicants can also meet potential partners during 15 minutes face-to-face meetings. The four topics, managed by the Research Executive Agency (REA), are part of the European Green Deal call, the last and largest of Horizon 2020, with a total budget of €1 billion.
The European Green Deal call is the first tangible contribution of research & innovation to the European Green Deal. It aims to mobilise research and innovation to foster a just and sustainable societal transition by providing concrete solutions for the Green Deal’s main priorities. The call contains eight thematic areas and three horizontal areas.
