What are the research priorities in the European fisheries sector?

ceres

The Research Executive Agency (REA) project CERES helped answer this question by sharing its research outcomes at the annual Seminar on Fisheries Science of the European Commission, held in Brussels last Friday. The event explored research needs and priorities in the field of fisheries for the coming years.

What will be the impact of climate change on Europe’s fish and shellfish resources and on the fishing industry? The EU-funded project CERES (678193) presented last Friday, 20 September, its work and results to the fisheries sector and policy-makers to prepare for and adapt to the adverse impact and potential benefits of climate change.

In the months leading up to the end of the project, Myron Peck, the project’s coordinator from the University of Hamburg, has pledged to transfer the knowledge gathered by CERES to policymakers.

ATLAS and EFICA, other research projects funded under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), presented their work and results.

The European Commission’s Research and Innovation Department also presented the state of play of the Horizon Europe discussion.

The seminar concluded with a round-table in which several experts discussed how to transfer scientific knowledge to management and what the priorities of fisheries science are. Some of the priorities relate to increasing the involvement of the fishing industry in research, expanding the role of social sciences in fisheries research, and improving the translation of research results into policy-making tools.

The annual seminar on Fisheries Science of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries gathers scientists, researchers, NGOs, the fishing industry and representatives from the European Parliament, the Council and EU countries.

The main goal is to explore research needs and priorities in the fisheries sector. The conclusions of the seminar are also expected to contribute to the preparation of the implementation of Horizon Europe, the next EU research and innovation programme.

CERES is funded under Horizon 2020 and is managed by the Research Executive Agency (REA).
