Rule of Law and Democracy in Europe: Your questions answered

Democracy and the rule of law - two of the EU’s fundamental values - have come under increasing pressure over the past 10 years. The massive open online course (MOOC) ‘Rule of Law and Democracy in Europe’ by EU-funded project RECONNECT explores the principles of these two values and how they can be defended against backsliding in the EU Member States.

The MOOC is an introductory course for anyone interested in understanding the current challenges of the rule of law and democracy in the EU. It consists of 6 modules spread over 8 weeks starting from 30 November up until 24 January. Each module takes around 3 hours to complete. The course is fully online and thus entirely COVID-safe. Dive into the subject by enrolling now!

Developed by the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (University of Leuven, Belgium), the course examines how the values of democracy and the rule of law are put into practice in Europe. It analyses also the specific policy areas where these values are of great importance such as trade, migration and recently - public health (COVID-19).

An interdisciplinary team of academic experts and practitioners in the field will guide participants through the various topics using videos, reading materials, and interactive exercises, such as word clouds and drag and drop questions. In addition, discussion platforms will offer networking and peer exchange opportunities.

About RECONNECT

The RECONNECT Project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, aims to understand and provide solutions to the main challenges facing the European democracy and the rule of law, such as backsliding Member States, growing distrust from the public, and the rise in populism. The project’s ultimate objective is to contribute to a new comprehensive narrative for Europe that “reconnects” European governance with citizens.
