Regulating Europe's electricity markets: Florence conference focuses on benefits for society

Building a strong European electricity market was the theme of a high-level conference on electricity regulation that took place on 27 November 2017 in Florence, Italy. A range of distinguished speakers from the European institutions, the energy industry, and national governments, including European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action Miguel Arias Cañete, met to focus on how the EU is creating an internal electricity energy market that works for consumers and society as a whole. Their discussions centred on three main themes: the economic benefits of a strong electricity market and its role in helping the EU meet its energy and climate targets, the positive impact of a more flexible market on consumers, and the ongoing process of strengthening energy interconnections between EU countries.

In his opening remarks, Commissioner Arias Cañete said:

The EU is moving fast towards a low-carbon, more digital, and consumer-centric energy system that is fit for the future. The electricity sector needs to be a driving force in reaching our decarbonisation objectives. We expect more than half of our electricity in Europe will come from renewables by 2030.
