The European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have this week welcomed the recent extension of the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on nuclear safety cooperation during this week’s meeting of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.At the first face-to-face physical general conference since 2019, the Commission team, led by DG ENER Deputy Director-General Massimo Garribba, will meet with some 20 international partners. Key focus areas for discussions include safety of small modular reactors, safety of fusion reactors, and coordination of positions ahead of the forthcoming review conferences of the IAEA conventions. These meetings will also look to advance nuclear safety in the broader region through encouraging and assisting partner countries to undertake EU-methodology nuclear safety stress tests.The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has its headquarters in Vienna, is the world's principal forum for intergovernmental co-operation in the nuclear field.
