The 2019 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is now over. Meanwhile our conversation continues online – see details of REA sessions and projects featured in the conference below and REA-Communicationec [dot] europa [dot] eu (contact us) for more information. Research Funding: Exploring Programmes in the European Union This session showcased European funding opportunities for researchers of any nationality, at several stages of their career. The session covered Marie Skłodowska-Curie pre- and postdoctoral fellowships, grants to principal investigators funded by the European Research Council, as well as assistance that researchers can get from the North American branch of EURAXESS. Fabio Ferrari (PhD, Politecnico di Milano) and Giulio Pergola (PhD, Università Degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro) shared their experience as fellows of the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, whereas Balázs Bodó (PhD, Universiteit van Amsterdam), a former fellow, told about his experience as grantee of the European Research Council. The European Commission’s H2020 multiactor approach was showcased through the SheepNet project, where REA and its project partners presented a sustainable thematic network for exchanging knowledge and issuing ready-to-use recommendations available to all practitioners. These results are inspiring further engagement of scientists and stakeholders in this and other fields, and are supporting international cooperation. Researchers from the STARBIOS project showed how RRI has helped raising awareness on epidemics and vaccines, improving nutrition and fostering open access to big data.
