At the EU-India summit held via videoconferencing today, Indian Prime Minister Modi, European Commission President von der Leyen and European Council President Michel adopted among the Summit deliverables a Joint Declaration to scale-up EU-India cooperation in the areas of resource efficiency and circular economy. The declaration establishes an India-EU Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Partnership bringing together representatives of relevant stakeholders from both sides, including governments, businesses (including start-ups), academia and research institutes. Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said: The environmental and economic ambition of the Green Deal will not be achieved by Europe acting alone. Our Strategic Partnership with India in the field of resource efficiency and circular economy is set to gain even further importance in this decade, as we address sectors and challenges that are high on our respective agendas, and seek a green recovery from the coronavirus crisis. The transition to a resource-efficient and circular economy is essential for the sustainability of EU and India’s economic growth and requires working together for a global systemic shift. The Partnership should support and strengthen dialogue and cooperation on resource efficiency and circular economy, facilitate the design, planning, implementation, promotion and dissemination of policies, strategies, technologies, business solutions and financing mechanisms on these issues, as well as enhance cooperation on research and innovation. Background Meeting the needs and aspirations of a rising global population in an increasingly resource constrained world is one of the foremost global challenges we face today. Resource efficiency and circular economy models can help us in decoupling economic growth from resource use and its negative environmental externalities. There is growing global acknowledgement of the significance of resource efficiency and circular economy for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and commitments under the Paris Agreement.
