Commission participates in World Nuclear Exhibition

The European Commission participates in the World Nuclear Exhibition, which takes place in Paris on June 26-28, 2018. A forum for the global nuclear energy sector, it is an opportunity for high-level panel discussions and networking sessions. The Commission has one stand showcasing how EU legislation focuses on nuclear safety and radiation protection, and the Fusion for Energy EU agency has a stand on the EU’s contribution to the ITER project.

In the EU, each Member State decides alone whether to include nuclear power in its energy mix or not. The peaceful use of nuclear energy within the EU is governed by the 1957 Euratom Treaty. While Euratom is a separate legal entity from the EU, it is governed by the EU's institutions. The European Commission deals with nuclear activities from three angles: nuclear safety (safe operation of nuclear installations); nuclear safeguards (measures to ensure that nuclear materials are used only for the purposes declared by the users); and nuclear security (physical protection of nuclear material and installations). The EU also supports the ITER project, the biggest scientific collaboration that will test the feasibility of fusion power.
