According to new figures published by Eurostat, 6.9% of the EU population said in an EU-wide survey 2019 that they could not afford to heat their home sufficiently. This share peaked in 2012 (10.8%), and has fallen continuously in subsequent years. The situation in the EU countries varies. The largest share of people who said that they could not afford to keep their home adequately warm was recorded in Bulgaria (30.1%), followed by Lithuania (26.7%), Cyprus (21.0%), Portugal (18.9%), Greece (17.9%) and Italy (11.1%). In contrast, the lowest shares (around 2%) were recorded in Finland, Austria, Sweden, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Estonia and Germany.
