This year’s European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) conference focused on “Ageing and long term operation of nuclear power plants in Europe - challenges and opportunities” and the “2050 Long term strategy” (LTS), as recently outlined in the strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050 – A Clean Planet for All. The Forum recognised that the approach shown in the Long-term strategy has to be translated into concrete actions. Investments in all low-carbon energy sources including nuclear need to be adequate to deliver the capacity foreseen in the strategy. The long term operation decided by EU Member States has to take into account the best practices and challenges identified in the EU Topical Peer Review (TPR). Measures by Member States stemming from the TPR will be reviewed by the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) by December 2021. Europe can lead the way to climate neutrality by investing in realistic technological solutions, by empowering citizens and aligning action in key areas. Beyond the expression of willingness, the EU needs to prove today its capacity to deliver its energy and climate targets all the way to 2050. Founded in 2007, the ENEF annual meetings take place alternatively in Bratislava and Prague. These are open to everyone with an interest in nuclear energy, including EU governments, European institutions such as the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee, representatives of the nuclear industry and regulators, electricity consumers, and civil society. The conference was webstreamed. Details Publication date2 May 2019AuthorDirectorate-General for EnergyLocationPrague
