Merje Laht

Merje Laht

Merje Laht is Head of Estonian Interpretation Unit at the Directorate General for Interpretation, at the European Commission. She studied interpreting at École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) in Paris and has been a practicing conference interpreter since 2001.

Before becoming a staff interpreter at the European Commission, she was Head of the Interpreter and Translator Training Centre at Tallinn University where she launched a post-graduate MA course in conference interpreting.

After joining the European Commission in 2003, she continued to provide regular pedagogical assistance to universities teaching conference interpreting with Estonian. In 2016-17 she was the Estonian Presidency Coordinator of DG Interpretation.
