Kayo Matsushita

Kayo Matsushita is a conference interpreter and Research Fellow at the Faculty of Intercultural Communication, Rikkyo University, Tokyo, where she held a full-time professorship until March 2026. Before entering academia, she worked for fourteen years as a staff writer at The Asahi Shimbun, a leading Japanese newspaper, including three years as a New York correspondent covering the United Nations. Since leaving the newspaper in 2011, she has worked as a professional conference interpreter at international conferences in both the public and private sectors.

Her research bridges theory and professional practice in interpreting, with a particular focus on the impact of emerging technologies on interpreting quality. Her recent work covers topics such as comprehension-based evaluation of human and AI interpreting in real-world settings, visual attention during Zoom-based remote simultaneous interpreting, and the assessment of interpreting quality using large language models.
