BiographyBorn in 1979, Kai Mykkänen has served as Mayor of Espoo since February 2025.Before taking office as Mayor, he served as Finland Minister of Climate and the Environment for two years. He has also previously served as Minister of the Interior and Minister for Foreign Trade and Development. In addition, he was a Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2025. During his career, Mykkänen has also worked in corporate banking and as a strategy consultant. He holds a Master of Social Sciences degree in economics. He started his political career as Chair of the Espoo Youth Council (1997–1998) and served as a member of the Espoo City Council from 2001 to 2008 and from 2017 to 2024 and as Chair of the City Council from 2020 to 2021.
