Professor Julie Clement, based in Michigan (USA), is a leading advocate for plain language and legal clarity. With a background in law and over two decades of teaching experience at Thomas Cooley Law School, she has dedicated her career to making legal and governmental language more accessible to the public. She is the president of Clarity Inc., an international organisation committed to plain legal language, where she also served as Editor-in-Chief of The Clarity Journal for 14 years. Professor Clement helped to develop ISO 24495-1 – the first global plain language standard – and was the project manager for ISO 24495-2, which focuses specifically on legal communication. She serves on the boards of the Center for Plain Language and the International Plain Language Federation. Professor Clement is the founder of J. Clement Communications, where she consults with public institutions, courts, and legal professionals on writing, editing, and designing clear documents. She is also the Deputy Clerk of the Michigan Supreme Court.
