Janiça Hackenbuchner

Janiça Hackenbuchner is an FWO (Research Foundation – Flanders) fellow PhD researcher in machine translation at the Language and Translation Technology Team, Ghent University. Her research focuses on AI-based language technologies and gender bias. She also works on data, digital and machine translation literacy (training) as a member of an Erasmus+-funded consortium.  

She is co-founder of the DeBiasByUs platform and co-organiser of the Gender-Inclusive Translation Technologies (GITT) workshops. Before her PhD, she was organisational lead on the DataLitMT Project, developing didactic resources for teaching data literacy in the context of machine translation literacy. Her broader research interests cover developments in natural language processing and fairness, translation, as well as training on data and digital literacy. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Specialised Translation and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sciences, and has experience teaching at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
