The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) and the European Commission are organising the first stakeholder meeting on the second peer review on the topic ‘Fire protection and fire prevention at nuclear installations’.
The event welcomes participants from nuclear safety authorities and regulators and other stakeholders in the EU, as well as representatives of the European institutions and NGOs. Speakers include the ENSREG chair Marta Žiaková, Deputy Directorate-General Massimo Garribba and Director Jan Panek, from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy, and representatives of some important European organisations and non-governmental organisations.
EU-wide topical peer reviews (TPRs) of selected nuclear safety topics include opportunities for public participation during the development of the process and in the review. This first stakeholder meeting aims to:
- provide information about the background and the objectives of the second TPR exercise (on fire protection);
- give an opportunity for stakeholders interested in the topic to meet and exchange ideas on the technical issues.
Background
The amended Nuclear Safety Directive introduced a European system of topical peer reviews beginning in 2017 and every 6 years thereafter.
Topical peer reviews are largely inspired by the stress tests undertaken after the Fukushima accident in 2011.
