This workshop will form an integral part of Eötvös Loránd University’s spring conference entitled "Reconceptualizing the role of the translator and interpreter in the digital age". The workshop will examine in what way artificial intelligence, in particular NMT has been changing the translator profession. Two plenaries on data-centric artificial intelligence in machine translation and on NMT-related changes regarding translators’ roles and translation quality, respectively, will pave the way for the round-table discussion, whose participants will explore how the progress of AI transforms the role of the human translator, what challenges and opportunities this progress presents for today’s translators, and what consequences it entails in terms of data management, ethical considerations and skills development. Insights on the topic will be offered from a number of different perspectives, including that of the computational linguist, the translator trainer and the lawyer-linguist.
