The path to becoming climate-neutral by 2050 The EU has set itself ambitious environmental, energy and climate targets for 2030 and 2040 on the way to becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. By 2030, the EU must cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels, putting the economy firmly on a carbon-neutral path. By 2040, emissions are expected to fall by around 90%, and by 2050 any remaining emissions must be balanced by carbon removals so that overall emissions reach net zero. These targets are designed as stepping stones towards one long-term goal and they create a predictable, gradual roadmap to help governments, businesses and citizens modernise energy systems and reduce pollution. Learn all about the respective targets and about the policy, strategy and legislation the EU has in place to achieve them.
