Renewable energy projects: permit-granting processes and Power Purchase Agreements

Accelerated deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) plays a central role in achieving the ambitions of the European Green Deal.

PPA event

Accelerated deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) plays a central role in achieving the ambitions of the European Green Deal and the European Climate Law, and it contributes to increasing Europe’s energy independence as outlined in the REPowerEU communication.

However, lengthy and complex permit-granting procedures and other administrative barriers slow down RES deployment. Barriers also hamper the development of renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which should become a major driver for increased market-based renewables deployment in the coming years.

In the context of the upcoming EU recommendation and guidance on good practices to improve permit-granting procedures for renewable energy projects and to facilitate PPAs and the ongoing public consultation, the event will bring together EU and national policy-makers, as well as project promoters and stakeholders involved in renewables projects and PPAs, to share their experience and ideas for ways to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy projects.

The event opens with a keynote speech from the Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, followed by a high-level roundtable and 2 panel discussions structured around the main topics covered in the guidance:

  • Permit-granting for renewable energy projects
  • Power Purchase Agreements
