Responsibilities
Maria Luís Albuquerque is Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union. Her task is to unlock the financing needed for the EU’s green, digital and social transition, while safeguarding financial stability, ensuring better access for EU businesses to finance and creating better opportunities for citizens to improve their own financial security.
She is responsible for:
- developing a European Savings and Investments Union, including banking and capital markets, to help leverage the enormous wealth of private savings in support of the EU’s wider objectives
- designing saving and investment products at EU level to tackle the fragmentation of capital markets
- reviewing the regulatory framework to ensure that European companies and start-ups can finance their expansion here in Europe
- working on risk-absorbing measures to crowd in private funding from commercial banks, investors and venture capital
- implementing the sustainable finance framework, and working at international level to ensure the EU remains a global leader
- improving the supervisory system at EU level in order to prevent risks to financial stability
- further developing the Banking Union and identifying a way forward on the European Deposit Insurance Scheme
- working that EU rules offer appropriate level of protection for consumers and retail investors, empowering them to take informed financial decisions
- improving digital finance and payments to support new technologies in our financial system
- implementing and enforcing the anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism package and preparing the launch of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Authority
- contributing to strengthen the strategic approach to sanctions, to ensure that we can react flexibly to new threats including cyber and hybrid attacks
