European Master's in Translation (EMT) Challenge winners announced

The competition was open for students from the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) Network universities. Participating students were invited to imagine the perfect computer assisted translation environment. They could focus on the whole CAT environment or a single aspect, work individually or in teams and the format of their entry was up to their imagination and creativity. A jury of DG Translation staff, EMT professors and industry representatives analysed the submissions. They were looking for projects that show a deep understanding of the CAT environment, including machine translation, and how AI could serve best the translator’s needs. All contestants demonstrated a high level of awareness of state-of-the-art translation tools. However, there could only be one winner. Team Translatorio convinced the jury with Verso – a Project Management tool based on machine learning as an integral part and support for decision-making.

The jury in particular mentioned the clarity of explanation supported bya very appealing PowerPoint presentation. A lot of thought and effort had clearly gone into the look-and-feel of the user interface. The jury also appreciated the ‘branding’ of the tool around the idea of a ‘sprout’ ('verso' in Finnish) that will grow over time through machine learning. The official award ceremony took place on the first day of the Translating Europe Forum (TEF) on 3.11.
