Commissioner Simson participates in Baltic Energy Security Summit in Denmark

Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is in Denmark today to participate in the Baltic Energy Security Summit, alongside Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the heads of government of Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland and Sweden. The summit aims to strengthen regional cooperation to increase the energy security of the area in the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The Commissioner will take part in two round-table discussions with the heads of government. Leaders will discuss the development of the Baltic Sea’s offshore potential to boost Europe’s renewable and domestic energy production, as well as how to integrate grids and markets across the region to strengthen energy security cooperation.

Commissioner Simson said:

The Commission strongly supports the regional energy integration of the Baltic Sea. Further steps towards the interconnectedness of the region will significantly strengthen Europe’s energy security and our green energy ambitions.

Tapping into the region’s wind power potential will significantly contribute to the EU’s energy security by taking it closer to the EU target of 300 GW wind power by 2050. Investments in offshore wind can accelerate the further integration of renewables in the European power grid and energy systems, strengthening the EU's common resilience and green ambitions.

The Summit is an important step further towards strengthening the security cooperation in the Baltic Sea. It follows the momentum generated by the North Sea Summit in Esbjerg, Denmark, which took place on 18 May 2022. It also builds on the long-standing and effective energy cooperation in the region through the Baltic energy market interconnection plan.

On 12 September, the North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC) Ministerial Summit will take place in Dublin to further increase cooperation and deliver upon ambitious 2030 and 2050 offshore targets for the NSEC region.
