Ensuring a safe and sustainable food chain


The European Commission aims to ensure a high level of health for humans, animals and plants throughout the food chain.

Actions under the Single Market Programme will help

  • prevent, control and eradicate animal diseases and plant pests
  • support sustainable food production and consumption
  • support the improvement of animal welfare
  • improve the effectiveness, efficiency and reliability of official controls


  • The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) - ensures the flow of information between its members 24 hours a day to enable swift reaction when risks to public health are detected in the food chain
  • Training for competent authorities in the areas of food and feed, animal health and welfare, and plant health
  • EU reference laboratories and reference centres
  • Financing of emergency measures

Calls for proposals

Calls for proposals for actions supporting a safe, sustainable foodchain under the Single Market Programme will be advertised on the website of the European Health and Digital Executive Agency and published on the European Commission’s Funding and tender portal.

Proposals can only be submitted electronically through the Funding and tender portal.
