Page contents Page contents Description Over the last decade, the EU’s medical technology and biotechnology sectors have been major drivers of economic transformation. In 2024, the EU Medtech industry reached a turnover of EUR 170 billion, employed over 900,000 people, and grew by 60% since 2014, with significant productivity gains. During the same period, the EU biotech industry has grown more than twice as fast as the overall EU economy and is one of the most productive industries. However, although medical technology and biotechnology respectively recorded 15,701 and 8,479 patent applications at the European Patent Office in 2025, the EU continues to face challenges in translating Medtech and Biotech innovation into market-ready products and in effectively pooling expertise and infrastructures. This CCT Med-Biotech Pilot is a 4-year project leveraging the combined potential of Medtech and Biotech innovation to bring groundbreaking health solutions to European patients. During its first phase, it will connect existing Medtech and Biotech infrastructures with complementary expertise – including biotech clusters and hubs, Medtech SMEs, pre-clinical and translational research institutions. Then, the project will support and validate two Med-Biotech product development projects – e.g. in the field of oncology and cardiovascular diseases – from late-stage research to industrial validation. The project will eventually facilitate the scale-up of the project outcomes through the commercialisation and investment strategies and clinical readiness. © AdobeStock / Clement C Potential project outcomes will range from precision diagnostics to detect cancer with a few drops of blood to heart patches repairing and regenerating damaged heart tissues, thus supporting EU health policy initiatives such as the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the Safe Hearts Plan. The pilot will lay the foundations for long-term collaboration among participating infrastructures that, beyond project completion, will be able to support many more Medtech and Biotech innovators in bringing breakthrough health solutions to patients, thus being a launchpad for the EU Biotech Act proposal activities aimed at strengthening Europe’s ecosystem for industrial scale-up and market readiness. The CCT Med-Biotech Pilot will reinforce the investment ambitions announced in the EU Biotech Act proposal, including the Health Biotech Investment Pilot and the EIB Group’s BioTechEU initiative, which aims to mobilise EUR 10 billion for the biotech sector in 2026 and 2027. By supporting existing infrastructures, the CCT Med-Biotech Pilot will maximise the impact of existing EU and private investments and serve as a catalyst for a stronger European Med-Biotech ecosystem by improving patient care, accelerating innovation uptake, and reinforcing Europe’s position as a competitive innovation hub.
