Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)

Total reference amount: €21,936.76 million (current prices)

Aims

The Connecting Europe Facility supports the development of high-performing, sustainable and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks in the field of energy, telecommunications and transport; building missing cross-border links and removing bottlenecks along main trans-European transport corridors. The Connecting Europe Facility allows the construction of projects that would not be taken up by the market otherwise.

Copernicus

Aims

Copernicus is a European system for monitoring the Earth. It ensures the regular observation and monitoring of Earth sub-systems, the atmosphere, oceans, and continental surfaces, and provides reliable, validated and guaranteed information in support of a broad range of environmental and security applications and decisions.

Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs (COSME)

Total reference amount: €2,298.24 million (current prices)

Aims

The COSME programme supported the competitiveness, growth and sustainability of EU enterprises, in particular SMEs, and promoted entrepreneurship. To reach these goals, the programme eased SME’s access to finance by providing loan guarantees and risk-capital. It facilitated access to new markets inside and outside the EU and reduced the administrative burden on SMEs.

Customs, Taxation and Fight against Fraud - Customs 2020

Aims

CUSTOMS AND TAXATION

The Customs 2020 programme supported the functioning and modernisation of the Customs Union. The Fiscalis 2020 programme supported the functioning of the taxation systems in the Union and in particular the fight against tax fraud, tax evasion and aggressive tax planning.

Both programmes funded a highly secured communication network allowing exchange of information between national customs and tax administrations and promoted knowledge-sharing and networking between officials of the EU countries’ customs and tax authorities.

FIGHT AGAINST FRAUD

The Pericles 2020 programme combated euro-counterfeiting in Europe and worldwide by funding exchanges, assistances and training for authorities, banks and others involved in the protection of euro coins and banknotes. The Hercule III programme was dedicated to fighting fraud, corruption and any other illegal activities affecting the financial interests of the EU, including the fight against cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting. The programme helped national law enforcement authorities in their fight against illegal cross-border activities by financing technical and operational support and professional training activities.

The Anti-Fraud Information System AFIS was an umbrella term for a set of anti-fraud applications operated by OLAF under a common technical infrastructure aiming at the timely and secure exchange of fraud-related information between the competent national and EU administrations, as well as storage and analysis of relevant data. The AFIS Project encompassed two major areas, Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters and Irregularities Management.

Employment and Social innovation Programme (EaSI)

Aims

The Employment and Social innovation Programme supported employment and social policies across the EU. The programme supported Member States' efforts in the design and implementation of employment and social reforms at European, national as well as regional and local levels by means of policy coordination and the identification, analysis and sharing of best practices.

Erasmus+

Aims

Erasmus+ aims at boosting skills and employability. The programme increases the quality and relevance of Europe’s education systems by providing funding for the professional development of education and training staff, as well as youth workers, and for cooperation between universities, colleges, schools, enterprises, and NGOs.

The EFSI was established within the EIB in order to benefit from its experience and proven track record and in order for its operations to start to have a positive impact as quickly as possible. The work of EFSI on providing finance to small and medium enterprises and small mid-cap companies was mainly channelled through the European Investment Fund (EIF) to benefit from its experience in these activities.

European Solidarity Corps (ESC)

Aims

The European Solidarity Corps creates opportunities for young people to volunteer or work in projects in their own country or abroad that benefit communities and people around Europe. Projects supported by the European Solidarity Corps can last from two to twelve months and are usually located within the European Union Member States.

Euratom Research and Training Programme

Aims

The Euratom Research and Training Programme (2014–18) complementing Horizon 2020 in the field of nuclear research and training was launched on 1 January 2014. It provided funding to improve nuclear safety and radiation protection, and to contribute to the long-term decarbonisation of the energy system.

Galileo & EGNOS

Total reference amount: €7,071.73 million (current prices)

Aims

Galileo is Europe’s initiative for a state-of-the-art global satellite navigation system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. The fully deployed system consists of 30 satellites and the associated ground infrastructure.

Galileo is inter-operable with GPS and GLONASS, the two other global satellite navigation systems. EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, is a fully operational regional satellite navigation system monitoring and correcting open signals emitted by the US GPS and Galileo in the future.

Horizon 2020

Aims

The Horizon 2020 programme aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness, strengthening its position in science and its industrial leadership in innovation by providing major investment in key technologies, greater access to capital and support for SMEs.

The programme aimed at tackling societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the market. Horizon 2020 was designed to be a different kind of EU research programme – funding the entire value creation chain from fundamental research through to market innovation, and with drastically less red tape.

Interoperability Solutions and common frameworks for European public administrations, businesses and citizens (ISA2)

The ISA successor programme, ISA2 (spelled “ISA square”), was aimed at further facilitating efficient and effective electronic interactions, cross-border or cross-sector, between European public administrations and between them and citizens and businesses, in order to enable the delivery of electronic public services and support the implementation of EU policies and activities.

ITER

Aims

ITER is an international collaborative project (EU, US, China, Japan, India, Russia, South Korea) to demonstrate the potential of nuclear fusion as an energy source. It is one of the world’s most ambitious research endeavours. Its results could dramatically change the world’s energy landscape opening the way to a safe, affordable, inexhaustible and CO2-free source of energy.
