The aim of the investment is the upgrade of the section Kranj-Jesenice, which is part of the one-track railway Ljubljana-Jesenice-State Border. The railway was built in 1870 and electrified in 1964. The investment aims to eliminate bottlenecks, increase train speed, traffic safety and maximise the capacity of the tracks.

This key railway section, which connects Slovenia's rail system to Austria, was the first completed project co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The works began in November 2020 and were completed in September 2022, resulting in 33 km of upgraded railway infrastructure that meets the following requirements: enhancing rail fluidity by removing bottlenecks, upgrading lines and stations in accordance with the technical specifications for interoperability, ensuring a load capacity of category D4 (22.5 t/axle and 8 t/m), and increasing train speeds to the new design standards.

More information can be found on the website of the project here.
