The objective of the measure is to mitigate the negative effects on human health, the environment, cultural sites and income from flooding events through managing flood risk.
In Nicosia, the Municipality of Nicosia has selected eight areas where a complete sewer system shall be constructed. The investment relates to the construction of a new rainwater drainage network that will be merged with the existing network, contributing to a more comprehensive flood response. Additionally the reconstruction of streets and pavements in the eight selected areas with a total length of approx. 7.2 km, aims to facilitate pedestrian and vehicle movement by providing enough walking space but also by creating low speed limit areas plus controlled and/or limited time on street parking spaces.
The construction works for 3 areas (Agios Antonios, Old city and Likavitos) have been completed. The construction works for 2 areas (Agioi Omologites and Trypiotis area) are expected to be completed by end of November 2023 and end of February 2023, respectively.
The Recovery and Resilience Facility provides funding of EUR 10.1 million for the project.
The entire project is expected to be concluded by the end of 2025.
