Paulo Rangel

Biography

Paulo Rangel was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1968. 

A law graduate from the Faculty of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University and a lawyer by profession, he was a lecturer of Administrative and Constitutional Law. 

He was an MEP from 2009 to 2024, elected as lead candidate in the 2009, 2014 and 2019 European elections.  

In the European Parliament, he sat on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. He was the Parliament’s standing rapporteur on Bosnia and Herzegovina (2019-2024) and drafted the report on the Parliament's right of legislative initiative. In 2015, he was elected vice-president of the European People's Party. 

He was elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 2005 and became chair of the PSD Parliamentary group in 2008. He has been vice-president of the PSD party since 2022.  

He was Deputy Minister of Justice from July 2004 to March 2005.
