Evaluation of the Environmental Crime Directive

The objective of the Directive is to contribute to a more effective protection of the environment and full application of the existing environmental EU legislation through criminal law. It aims at ensuring a level playing field in the Member States by approximating the criminalization of environmental offenses, and ensuring deterrent sanction levels in all Member States. Through the evaluation, the Commission has taken stock of state of the implementation of the Directive by Member States, of whether the Directive has fostered cross-border cooperation, as well as of the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and EU added value of the Directive. The evaluation has integrated the results of the public stakeholder consultation, which was held from 10 October 2019 to 02 January 2020.

The Staff Working Documents of the evaluation report, annexes to the evaluation report, and summary of the evaluation report as well as the opinion of the Regulatory Scrutiny Board on the Evaluation are provided below.
