DG Informatics joins EU Voice and EU Video as part of an open source social media pilot

DG Informatics of the European Commission (DIGIT) joined forces with the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) to enable technically a pilot project for using two privacy-focused social media platforms - EU Voice and EU Video.

EU Voice and EU Video use free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services – EU Voice is based on the Mastodon and EU Video on the PeerTube open source software, collectively known as part of the Fediverse. They connect users in a privacy-focused environment, in which there are not any advertisements, or profiling of users. Related data are all hosted in the EU.

DIGIT provides technical assistance to the EDPS, in line with the goals of the Commission’s Open Source Software Strategy 2020 - 2023. As both EU Voice and EU Video are based on such software, the pilot helps DIGIT prove the practical value of open source as technical enabler of privacy rights and data protection and showcases its geopolitical importance as a means to gain technological sovereignty.

You can now follow DIGIT on EU Voice and EU Video. You can also follow the Commission's official account which offers citizens an alternative way to receive news and information about the benefits of EU policies, mirrored from the official @EU_Commission Twitter account.
