An event showcasing the EU’s leading contribution to accelerating the clean energy transition will be held in the margins of the COP25 in Madrid on Tuesday 10 December. EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson will open the day-long EU Energy Day event, hosted at the EU Pavilion. International stakeholders will discuss opportunities and challenges linked to the transformation of the energy system and try to identify shared values and avenues for international cooperation activities. Speaking ahead of the event, EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said: The top priority of this Commission is to deliver the European Green Deal and to embrace the paradigm shift necessary to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The production and use of energy across economic sectors account for more than 75% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. The decarbonisation of the energy system is therefore absolutely crucial to reach our objectives. We have to continue to promote energy efficiency, and invest in a power sector that is based largely on renewable sources, while at the same time putting the consumer at the heart of the energy system and ensuring secure and affordable energy supply for all Europeans. A high-level opening will set the stage for the day, conveying the political message of the event. Keynote speakers include the Energy Minister of Chile Juan Carlos Jobet, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Patricia Espinosa, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera, and EP ITRE Committee member Maria Spyraki. A further session involving EU Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, President of the EIB Werner Hoyer, and Michael R Bloomberg will consider the potential role for the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. This will be followed by four thematic sessions addressing the role of renewables, innovation, just transition and buildings in the energy transition and a closing session on the use of the Copernicus system to reduce methane emissions.
