We are

The Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) is the largest public language service in the world and is responsible for providing the Commission with translation services and linguistic advice in all the official languages, thereby contributing to the EU policy of multilingualism and bringing the Union’s policies closer to its citizens.

Unit R.4 is part of DGT’s Resource Directorate and focuses on professional and organisational development, covering Knowledge Management within DGT and with external partners, thus contributing to the Development of the Translation Profession.

With offices in Luxembourg and Brussels and a staff of around 20, the general atmosphere in the unit is informal, friendly and cooperative.

We propose

We propose for the Brussels based team an interesting and diversified job as policy officer coordinating the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network, one of DGT’s flagship projects. Moreover, the successful candidate will contribute to other files of the unit, as the activities developed in the EMT are supposed to feed into the knowledge management activities in DGT and several files such as the Visiting Translator Scheme (VTS) or traineeships are relevant for the EMT universities. We offer a rewarding position at the interface of translation and professional development, giving you the possibility to interact with all DGT services as well as many external partners.

Business continuity is a must for a unit interacting with various stakeholders inside and outside DGT. Therefore, colleagues back-up for each other and as a member of the team, you will be asked to ensure back-up for some colleagues, in a collegial way, allowing you to take up and learn new tasks.

The selected candidate will have the following tasks:

  • Organise the EMT selection procedure and manage its follow-up;
  • Coordinate the EMT network in close cooperation with the EMT Board, define the EMT work programme and monitor its implementation;
  • Organise bi-annual EMT network meetings, overseeing logistical preparations and providing content;
  • Attend external and internal events on the EMT project.
  • Draft briefings, notes and reports for internal and external use;
  • Maintain the EMT webpage and collaborative spaces;
  • Manage the EMT communication plan;
  • Contribute to the unit’s other activities.
  • The activities will be carried out under the supervision of an official/temporary agent.

We look for a motivated and proactive person with strong organisational and coordination skills.

More concretely, you should

  • Have good project management skills;
  • be able and willing to work in a team;
  • have good drafting skills in English and French;
  • have good public speaking skills;
  • be service-minded and flexible;
  • be well acquainted with DGT priorities and the current EU policies in the field of higher education and multilingualism;
  • be a proficient user of the corporate IT tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as collaborative tools for remote working environments, such as Teams.

To be eligible for recruitment at the European Commission you must

  • have a level of education which corresponds to completed university studies of at least three years attested by a diploma[1];
  • be a national of one of the Member States of the European Union and enjoy full rights as a citizen;
  • have fulfilled any obligations imposed by the applicable laws on military laws;
  • produce appropriate character references as to his or her suitability for the performance of the duties;
  • be physically fit to perform the duties;
  • produce evidence of a thorough knowledge of one of the languages of the Union and a satisfactory knowledge of another language of the Union to the extent necessary for the performance of the duties;
  • Have passed a valid EPSO CAST in Function Group IV or
    be registered in the EPSO Permanent CAST (https://epso.europa.eu/en/job-opportunities/open-for-application) in a valid FG for this post before applying*.
