An exhibition of beloved children's books from European countries that will be displayed in September 2023 at the Europa Experience in Vienna and at the Graz Language Festival. From there, it will travel all over Europe to be displayed at schools, libraries, language fairs, festivals and other language-related events. This is the 10th edition of the DGT travelling book exhibition.

Join the central EDL celebrations organised by the European Commission in Brussels and Luxembourg by participating in our online conference. Participate virtually connecting to the event on our pages and social media!
This year, the main EDL event will have teachers in the spotlight in the context of the European Education Area, as well as of the European Year of Skills given that multilingualism is one of eight key competences needed for personal fulfilment, a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, employability, active citizenship and social inclusion. We will be discussing topics such as:
- EU support to teachers aiming to boost their capacity in language teaching
- Cooperation in initial teacher education and continues professional development: the Erasmus + teacher academy ALTA
- Role of mobility in boosting teachers’ capacity (courses, job shadowing)
We will also present the main results of the 2023Eurydice Key Data on Teaching Languages in Europe Reportwith a special focus on teachers, their qualifications and training, mobility/Erasmus +/tools to support teachers (ESEP).

The Language Festival will be open for public and the main theme will be the promotion of multilingualism and language learning through a series over 50 lectures, language classes, quizzes, workshops and round tables covering the richness and cultural heritage of over 15 nations. Joint different festival events: introductory language courses, a workshop in literary translation, a lecture and a workshop in conference interpreting (in booths), workshops on audio-visual translation and machine translation, multiple quizzes on languages, lectures on history, dialects and culture of EU nations, etc.

18 September, European Day of Languages Pub Quiz
Venue: pubs across the Czech Republic where regular pub quizzes organized by the company "Hospodský kvíz s.r.o."
The European Commission Representation in the Czech Republic has joined forces with "Hospodský kvíz s.r.o.", a company that organizes regular weekly pub quizzes in restaurants and pubs across the Czech Republic, to integrate the theme of multilingualism and languages into pub quizzes held in the week prior to the European Day of Languages.

26 September, Speak-dating and a language quiz at Kampus Hybernská

An all-day language festival organized by Charles University's Faculty of Arts will take place at Kampus Hybernská in Prague. The programme includes a speak-dating event for general public with 5-minute one-on-one lessons offered in over 20 languages and a language-themed pub quiz for the public.

An invitation-only speak-dating event for elementary schools, whose students will have won the "Multilingualism is Treasure" arts competition organized by Kamarádi (Friends), a multilingual magazine for bi-lingual children. Four selected participating school groups of approx. 100 pupils in total will be invited to the European House in Prague to attend a mini-speak dating event and an award-giving ceremony.

25 May - 11 September, Video challenge for schools "We love languages"
Venue: online and European House in Copenhagen
Schools - primary, secondary and upper secondary - are invited to send a short 30 seconds video promoting languages for a video challenge ''We love languages" ("Vi elsker sprog"). Videos must include an explanation of why a particular language is interesting: "I love [language X] because...".
We will invite the winner in each category to the European House on 26 September to receive their prizes and attend a language celebration European Day of Languages event. Campaign videos will be displayed during the event. At the event experts from the language learning field will speak about the motivation behind language learning and teaching (German, French, English). The event will also feature readings of literature in foreign languages. Participants will also get a chance to try their skills in tongue twisters in foreign languages.

Do you recognize the language? Test your skills on Vikerraadio's website in a language quiz dedicated to the European Day of Languages. The children of the Tallinn European School read an abstract from a beloved Estonian children's book "Three Jolly Fellows" in their language. Your task is to guess the language! 1-30 September, Social media campaign about languages and skills
Venue: online
During September short video clips where people with different professions highlight the importance of knowing languages will be shown on social media. There will also be a video version where all the different protagonists in the campaign are present, and this video will be sent to all schools in Finland to celebrate EDL and highlight the importance of learning languages.

Hi language teacher! Bring your students along and come and familiarise yourselves with a range of European languages in our Language Café! The café takes place on Tuesday, 26 September, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and again from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm in Oodi Central Library in Helsinki, right across the EU@Oodi information point on the ground floor of the library.
During your visit, you and your pupils get a taste of several European languages and countries in a playful way. You even get a chance to try simultaneous interpretation in a real interpreter booth with the help of professional interpreters.
The visit takes just over an hour and is free of charge. The event is aimed for grades 7−9 and upper secondary schools.

26 September, Poetry recital in different European languages and a panel discussion on the influence of other languages on Finnish

Poetry recital: In cooperation with the European Commission Representation, the Embassy of Poland in Finland organises a Poetry recital of one of the Nobel Prize winning Polish poet Maria Wisława Anna Szymborska’s (1923−2012) poems in the official languages of the EU as well as in the original language, Polish. The event takes place on the Saarikoski-matto on the third floor of Oodi Central Library in Helsinki, on Tuesday, 26 September, from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The event is free of charge and open for all.
Panel discussion: Are you curious about different loanwords and newly coined words in Finnish? Do you want to know more about the influence various languages have had – and continue to have – on the Finnish language? If so, head for the Saarikoski-matto on the third floor of Oodi Central Library in Helsinki on Tuesday, 26 September, at 5.30 pm, where experts will share their views on the topic and answer your questions.
Roman Schatz, a journalist with German roots, moderates the panel discussion. The panellists will be confirmed later. The discussion will be held in Finnish.

Language teachers are warmly welcome to a bilingual seminar at the Hanasaari cultural centre in Espoo! Come enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with some snacks and meet colleagues, after which we gather to the lecture hall Kullager for an elevating language teacher training in both national languages, Finnish and Swedish. 27 September, Multilingual European Day of Languages concert

Do you like languages and music? Perfect, then you will love this swinging multilingual concert organised by the European Commission Representation in Finland together with several EU embassies and language institutes in Finland, as well as with the Svenska nu network!
How does, for example, jazz and traditional songs in different European languages, a Czech choir with a bagpipe, or an Irish band performing in Irish sound? In Swedish, Finnish and English we will get to enjoy wonderful songs sung by Tomas and Maria Höglund accompanied by piano.
Come to the Hanasaari cultural centre in Espoo on Wednesday, 27 September, at 6 pm to be spellbound by a number of charming and skilful artists from all corners of the EU.

26 September, "We say..." - an improvised comedy show travelling through the languages and cultures in Europe
Venue: Berliner Kriminal Theater, Berlin
Duration: 7 - 9.30 p.m.
"Bei uns sagt man....." ("We say ...") - be part of an improvised theatre performance about languages and cultures in Europe and bring in your own ideas. Three experienced and skilled improvisational artists from Berlin, Graz and Strasbourg will stage linked stories in the Berliner Kriminal Theater, in the style of their home country, in German, English and French as well as in some regional dialects. The actors will define the style elements and more detailed topics spontaneously together with the audience during the performance. The actors will draw on proverbs, stereotypes and other language elements in a funny way. A musician will accompany the performance on stage.

22-23 September, The languages of the knights
Venue: Auberge de France, Rhodes
In the Middle Ages, long before the emergence of nation-states, the Knights Hospitaller of Rhodes were organised along "languages". Each language had its own headquarters in the medieval town of Rhodes. In this event, high school pupils from Rhodes will pose questions on languages to passers-by in the medieval town of Rhodes. A presentation on the languages of Europe at the time of the Knights will follow in the imposing Auberge de France.

This year, the annual EDL fair organised by EUNIC Athens in cooperation with DG Translation will be held in the lush National Garden, with children's rights as its main theme. On Saturday, 23 September, from 10 am to 3 pm, visitors can browse the stands of various cultural institutions and learn about their languages and cultures. Children can take part in workshops to create their own postcards, paper chains and draw or write their messages on children's rights. At the same time, storytellers will narrate fairy tales and legends from various European countries, which will be drawn on a big storyboard, thus coming to life before the public's eyes.

About 30 cultural organizations set up their stands in the great hall of the Italian Cultural Institute of Budapest. Visitors wander from stand to stand, collecting stamps by participating in fun and interesting games. Those who collect enough stamps receive an alcohol-free cocktail and can enter a raffle to win prizes. Visitors can also participate in mini language classes to get a taste of various languages from Portuguese to Korean and sign language.

This event is planned to coincide with the Culture Night celebrations in Ireland and open to the general public . 22 September, Żanżan Kelma, spelling bee

Żanżan Kelma, the first and only spelling bee in the Maltese language, is now in its sixth year. This year, the semi final will be held at the Aġenzija Żgħażagħ premises, while the final will be held during the Language Festival.

Venue: University of Malta Valletta Campus
The Language Festival is a one-day event with multiple activities, and will serve as a platform for as many EU languages and language and translation-related NGOs as possible. The event will be made up of a language fair with stands, as well as language activities such as short introductory lessons, a creative writing workshop, a lecture/panel discussion, an intergenerational activity on old and current Maltese expressions, a concert and the annual spelling bee, Żanżan Kelma.

26 September, EDL Fun Language Classes for secondary schools
Venue: EUNIC member locations in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht
This Fun Language Classes event consists of free sample language classes of approximately 20 minutes for secondary school students aged around 12, in cultural and language institutes in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. Each venue hosts one secondary school (approx. 60 students) and each student will get 4 language lessons.
The event will be open to approximately 300-400 children.
This year we will put a special focus on the translation profession and traditional and new translators’ skills (e.g. technological, data and project management skills).
The event will be connected to a Europe-wide event in the framework of the European Day of Languages.

In this Language Café, come and try one or more languages, ranging from Estonian to Papiamento and from Swiss German to Latin. You will experience a short five to ten-minute face-to-face sessions with professional language teachers and language university students.
15-25 different languages will be on offer including Ukrainian and Dutch sign language.
These sessions will be a unique opportunity to learn a few words/expressions in a new language, get some insights into the European cultures or have a conversation /practice in a language you already masters.
The event promotes the linguistic, ethnic and cultural diversity and variety of Europe to foster mutual respect and understanding. It further provides for new friendships and professional opportunities.

28 September, Multilingualism in Europe and in Dutch politics

Information and networking event for multilingualism professionals in the Netherlands, in cooperation with the Drongo platform for multilingualism.
During the event, Mrs. Ana Sole Mena (European Commission) will present European research and recent initiatives and programmes in the field of multilingualism, as well as the upcoming Eurobarometer on languages, followed by a discussion with the public. Other discussions include the place of multilingualism in the Netherlands in the upcoming elections and new political scene. Networking and informal exchanges will take an important place in this event.

18 November, Translation contest and workshops during the ‘Vertaaldag’ (Translation Day) 2023
Venue: De Nieuwe Liefde, Da Costakade 102, Amsterdam
Each year, Verstegen&Stigter organizes the ‘Vertaaldag’ (Translation Day) to underline the importance of translation. In the run-up to the ‘Vertaaldag’ 2023, a translation contest has been organized to give a broad public a taste of the translation profession. The texts to translate, in English, French, German, Spanish, offered a tour through European capitals and therefore celebrated European diversity.
During the 'Vertaaldag', on 18 November 2023, the winners (one for each language combination) will be announced and 4 workshops will be held to discuss the contributions . In the workshops, translations will be compared and cultural and linguistic differences discussed. They will be open to all participants in the 'Vertaaldag'.
During the ‘Vertaaldag’, The European Commission will also host a stand with information on multilingualism, the EU and the translation service of the European Commission (DGT), as well as small gadgets around multilingualism.

30 September, I'm sure we'll get along: open space language game
Venue: Kraków
Together with our EUNIC partners, we invite teams of 3-5 people to register and take part in this open space game to be held in the historic city of Krakow on 30 September. To help you along the way, you will be given a plan of the game area and a Dictionary of Miscellaneous Languages with a pool of starting points you can lose or increase as you complete the tasks that await you.

From 6 to 26 September, questions on Europe and its languages will be posted on the Facebook and Instagram accounts of European Commission Representation in Portugal. Each participant will have to identify 3 other friends. A winner will be drawn each day for each of the platforms among the correct answers.

28 September, EDL Language Fair in the region of Porto
Venue: Main square at Paredes, surroundings of Porto
European Day of Languages celebrations will travel to the North of Portugal, near Porto, in the town of Paredes. From 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the language fair will feature information stands from various entities (including European Commission, European Parliament and the travelling exhibition - The Little Prince) and a stage where different performances will take place. Among the performances, a dramatized reading of “The Little Prince” by actress Inês Blanc, and a journey around European Music, from classical to ABBA, by the excellent Indy Trupe.
A tombola will be organised among all participants.
2-4 October, School gathering - theatre workshop
Venue: Beja
In the city of Beja, a theatre workshop will take place with schools (European Parliament Ambassador Schools) from Coimbra, Bombarral, Alenquer, Sintra, Lisbon, Serpa (Portugal) and Mérida (Spain). During 3 days, several activities will be organised including open days of some of the schools and several public performances organised in Cine Teatro Pax Julio by the school community of Beja.
6 October, Online event for schools
This online seminar for schools will include a small presentation on Europe and its languages and it will be targeted at students aged 12-15, followed by videos sent by schools. For this purpose, schools of the whole country are invited to send their videos on languages and skills, in order to celebrate the European Year of Skills.

Harry Potter is on his tour de Slovaquie! First stop: Košice. EDL in Košice will feature a Harry Potter travelling book exhibition, language quizzes, stage reading and a discussion about reading, theatre and languages. You can also try out a new game called Vortoj, which connects language quizzes with physical exercise (participants use electronic dance carpets to mark the correct options). Stage reading of HP books will be performed by actors from ActofKAA theatre group.

EDL celebrations in Bratislava will take two whole days this year!
On September 26 you will find us in the Bratislava City Library with our Harry Potter book exhibition: a collection of Harry Potter books in all European languages. There will also be Harry Potter language quizzes including a game called Vortoj which combines language learning and physical exercise. For the afternoon we have prepared a multilingual theatre performance: stage reading from Harry Potter books and discussion with actors about theatre and language learning. The theatre group Spare Parts will perform stage reading in 5 different languages.
The next day, September 27, will consist of a full day online conference for primary and secondary school students and teachers: a series of workshops and presentations organizes by NIVAM in cooperation with language institutes focused not only on big languages but also on minority languages. The program will be concluded by a panel discussion about language learning in the context of European Year of Skills and recent developments in AI.

Are you a student who likes watching films or reading in foreign languages? If the answer is yes, this competition might be just the thing for you! Become a film or literary critic for one day and send us a review of a film/book/TV series in a foreign language that you have recently watched! The specific conditions will be announced on September 26 and you will have two months to complete the task and send it to us. The best two works will be awarded with a two days´ study visit to Brussels organized by the European Commission Representation in Slovakia.

The representative of Ministry of Education will give the presentation on “Eurydice’ Key data on teaching languages at school in Europe 2023”. The president of the Slovene Association of Conference Interpreters will give the interactive presentation entitled “Is Interpreting Merely Translation“ where she will present the work of interprets and the role of translation. DGT member will present their view on artificial intelligence and it’s role in the translation process. The first part will be concluded by the award ceremony (National Language Awards) as the main EDL event in Slovenia. It will include presentations of 10 best multilingual school projects. During the working break, the EUNIC members will have opportunity to present their activities. The second part will conclude with the workshop on “Latin Lives on in Slovenian”.

22 September, Language Orienteering
Venue: Wider area of Ljubljana (Start/End at EU House, Dunajska 20, Ljubljana)
Language Orienteering is a competition where participants need to find control points on the basis of photos and descriptions provided to them at the start of the course. At the control points, participants will need to perform various language tasks, which will give them additional points. The length of the course will be app. 4 km, and will take the participants some 140 minutes to cover (including solving tasks at control points). The organisation of the event will be carried out by the Ljubljana Boy scouts Association. In a true boy scout spirit, the event will take place in all weather condition.

EUNIC Barcelona has just been established and we are teaming up with them to organise the first-ever EDL in-person event in Barcelona.
