EU funding for Roma integration

For the 2014-2020 period, Sweden will be allocated a total of €1.7 billion in funds from the European Social Fund (ESF) and European Regional Devleopment Fund (ERDF). At least 42.5% of this amount will be spent on the ESF, with at least 20% of that going towards the promotion of social inclusion and combating poverty. The latter could also finance Roma-related measures.

Facts and figures

The Council of Europe estimates that approximately 42,500 Roma live in Sweden (0.46% of the population). For data on the situation of the Roma in this country, please see the overview published by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights.

National Roma integration strategy

Sweden has produced a strategy for Roma inclusion that covers 20 years (2012 to 2032). The overall objective is that a Roma person aged 20 should have the same opportunities in life as a non-Roma person by 2032.

The strategy complements general policies towards disadvantaged groups. It covers the four key areas (education, employment, health and housing) and two additional areas: culture/language and civil society (empowerment). The responsibility for the strategy’s implementation rests largely with local and regional authorities.

Assessment of Sweden’s strategy implementation

In Spring 2014, the Commission assessed the implementation of the national Roma integration strategies in the four key areas of education, employment, healthcare and housing, as well as progress made in the fight against discrimination and the use of funding.

National contact point

Each EU country was invited to appoint a national contact point for the national Roma integration strategy, with the authority to co-ordinate its development and implementation. In Sweden, it is the Ministry of Employment’s division for discrimination issues (Government offices of Sweden).
