Structuring information to make it findable

Purpose

The overarching goal of structuring information via architecture and navigation is to make content easy for users to find.

Guidelines

European Commission sites are typically information-based. The Commission’s web presence contains a lot of information, so it needs to be structured in a user-centred way that follows users’ logic [based on user research], rather than organisational structures, and to address the tasks users are looking to complete on EC sites, eg ‘I’m looking for information on…x, y, z’.

User research such as user surveys will help you define the relevant hierarchy of information and will also inform the terms you use - on labels, for example.
