This investment has the purpose of deploying fully electric, zero-emission inland waterway transport. In total, this includes 75 Modular Energy Containers, 14 loading sites for vessels and 45 fully electric inland waterway vessels. The programme also makes electric sailing more affordable for the vessel-owners.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The first electric, zero-emission vessel is already in use. This vessel, called ‘De Alphenaar’, sails between Alphen aan den Rijn en Moerdijk.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the project on 8 September 2022, on the occasion of the approval of the Dutch Recovery and Resilience Plan.
