The Comprehensive Conservation of Turjak Castle - Sustainable restoration and revitalisation of cultural heritage and public cultural infrastructure

The investment objectives for Turjak Castle are diverse and in line with broader initiatives to preserve cultural heritage and boost tourism. The comprehensive renovation within the project will concentrate on the restoration of yet-to-be-restored sections if the castle, encompassing the palace or northern wing, bastion, and inner courtyard. Additionally, the project aims to restore surrounding buildings and implement outdoor landscape and garden arrangements to complement the historical setting.

This holistic investment seeks to redefine Turjak Castle, creating a versatile destination that seamlessly combines historical preservation with modern amenities. The provision of cultural, touristic, and accommodation services, coupled with outdoor space enhancements, aligns with the overarching goal of making Turjak Castle an attractive and engaging destination for a diverse range of visitors. The completion of this project is expected to significantly enrich the cultural landscape and enhance the tourism appeal of the region.

Financial support for this initiative is provided by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, contributing EUR 8.5 million to a project valued at EUR 10.4 million in total. The unveiling of renovation plans for the castle occurred in 2022, with works scheduled to commence in 2024 and 2025, concluding in June 2026. The renovated castle is anticipated to welcome its first visitors in the summer of 2026, marking a pivotal milestone in the revitalization of this historic site.
