Kristalina Georgieva

Biography

Kristalina Georgieva is Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

She was previously CEO of the World Bank (2017-2019) during which time she served as Interim President of the World Bank Group for three months.
She helped shape the agenda of the European Union in her role as European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources (2014-2016) and as Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response (2010-2014).
She began her career in public service at the World Bank as an Environmental Economist in 1993 where she went on to serve for 17 years in senior positions including Vice President and Corporate Secretary (2008-2010).

She holds a PhD in Economic Science from the University of National and World Economy in Bulgaria.
