To create a context more similar to how translators work today, this year our annual Juvenes Translatores translation contest went digital for the very first time with participants translating online! It was also the first time that our special mention students (271 out of 3116 participants) left their digital footprint on the JT website: their names were published online, just like the winners are published each year.
This year’s topic was about ‘How can young people contribute to the future of Europe’. A very topical and relatable subject. We received many good translations in 150 language combinations (out of 552 possible!), some of which also made us laugh and left us speechless thanks to their subtlety.
But to go fully digital, due to the pandemic, instead of hosting the award ceremony for the winners in Brussels, this year DG Translation organised the very first virtual award ceremony. On 8 May 2020 – one day before Europe day – we celebrate the achievements of the 28 best young European translators together online.
Despite the unusual circumstances, it is a pleasure to see how these gifted youngsters keep up and stand together trying to make the EU and the world a better place. This is what Europe needs, more than ever before.
