On 14 November 2007, more than a thousand 17-year-olds from almost 300 schools across the European Union had a go at professional translation. They were not alone: a team of over 20 was also on hand all day in Brussels to solve last-minute glitches and ensure all queries were answered in the caller/e-mailer's native language.
After the contest, the Juvenes Translatores mailbox filled up with enthusiastic messages of appreciation at being part of a fun Europe-wide event that was also a learning experience.
The contest found an echo in the local media and in the schools themselves.
Over a hundred assessors then evaluated more than 1300 translations before the Christmas holiday. They were impressed by the ability and imagination shown by the contestants.
Juvenes Translatores has been a rewarding experience: reaching out to the public, promoting language learning and raising awareness of the translation profession.
