European Master's in Translation (EMT) membership criteria and selection procedure

Information on eligibility and selection criteria and future calls for membership. 

Members of the EMT network are selected on the basis of calls for applications, organised every five years. The latest call for membership was published on 15 September 2023. The basic eligibility and selection criteria are as follows:

Eligibility

Universities can apply if the programme has, at least, two cohorts of graduates of an officially recognised Master’s degree in translation and is authorised by:

  • an EU Member State, 
  • certain non-EU countries:
    • EU candidate countries and potential candidatesAlbania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo1, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Türkiye, Ukraine;
    • the countries participating in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) — Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine2, Syria, Tunisia;
    • the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Selection criteria

Programmes have to meet a number of criteria relevant for quality translator training according to the EMT standards: 

  • structure of the programme — objectives, credits and expected learning outcomes of the courses given 
  • coverage of the key competences according to the new EMT Competence Framework 
  • sustainability — staffing policy and number of graduates over the past years 
  • career support and monitoring — including career guidance for students, internships, tracking of careers after graduation and employment statistics

  • cooperation with higher education institutions at an international level or participation in national networks 
  • effective quality assurance system 
  • research activities
