School building security and structural rehabilitation plan (Mission 4 – Component 1 - Investment 3.3)

Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan contributes to climate recovery also by enhancing school buildings’ safety and energy consumption.

In particular, this measure aims to contribute to the improvement of energy classes and leading to lower consumption and CO2 emissions as well as to increase structural safety of buildings.

Particular attention is paid to the most disadvantaged areas with the aim of tackling and eliminating economic and social imbalances.

The investment is financed by Italy’s Recovery and Resilience plan by EUR 4.4 billion.

The project is part of this investment.

The "Regina Margherita" Institute is located in the south of Turin, in via Casana, and was built in the second half of the last century.

The building is of the partially prefabricated type, with self-supporting facade panels and structure in elevation built on site.

The panels have a slight criticality due to their attachment to the supporting structure, which is lacking for the purpose of meeting industry regulations (NTC 2018).

It is therefore planned to carry out an integrative fixing of the panels, by tessellation, which will significantly reduce their possible overturning under the action of the earthquake.

It is also planned to carry out: the rehabilitation of the portions of the structure exposed to the action of the weather, to eliminate the initial state of degradation; the construction of a retaining wall of the ground; the construction of the new pavement of the pavement around the stairwells; the replacement of the domes on the school’s flat roof; the renovation of the paving of the terraces on the first floor.
