The objective of this measure is to support high quality, inclusive education allowing for the further integration of pupils with special needs into the mainstream school environment. The establishment of the first two autism units in Ta’ Paris Middle School in Birkirkara and Ħandaq Middle School in Qormi in 2021 allows 16 students to learn in a supportive and adapted environment. Two teachers and six learning support assistants have already received training in inclusive pedagogy, while trainings for other teachers and learning support educators is ongoing. The reform also entails the setting up of two new multi-sensory learning rooms as well as the implementation of key measures of Malta’s updated National Inclusion Policy Strategy by the end of 2025.
