In the context of the dramatically increasing average age of the population and a worldwide increase in the incidence of neurological and especially neurodegenerative diseases with still unclear etiology and pathogenesis, and no preventive or causal therapy, there is an urgent need for research focusing on these diseases. This imperative is all the more important given that the health and economic impact on our society will be enormous in the coming decades. Therefore, there is a clear need to develop the necessary components of neurodegeneration research in the areas of clinical, imaging, electrophysiological, molecular genetic, biochemical and neuropathological markers, etiopathogenetic mechanisms and experimental therapies. The central goal of the project is to develop the conditions and integrate the efforts of the best research teams from the participating institutions (Charles University, Masaryk University, Czech Academy of Sciences) to conduct cutting-edge research on disorders of brain development and aging, especially neurodegeneration and its etiopathogenesis, with effective interdisciplinary interconnection and continuity of methodologies and topics addressed by the individual teams.
