Safety at European nuclear installations is the theme of a conference that begins on Thursday in Brussels. The two-day Fifth ENSREG (European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group) Conference on Nuclear Safety, rather than merely a technical discussion, is intended to be a broad debate between nuclear safety stakeholders such as nuclear safety regulators and energy companies, NGOs, national governments and the European institutions. ENSREG is an independent expert advisory group, in which all EU Member States are represented by senior officials from their national regulatory authorities or nuclear safety authorities. One of the key topics of the conference is the conclusion and the follow-up of the first Topical Peer Review (TPR), which focused on ageing management of nuclear installations; this exercise was introduced by the amended nuclear safety directive in 2014 and takes place every six years. Other important topics include decommissioning and waste management, standardisation of supply chain and component obsolescence, and knowledge management.
