First meeting of the Expert Group on Public Administration and Governance

The inaugural  meeting of the Expert Group on Public Administration and Governance chaired by the European Commission took place on January 31st. DG REFORM Director General, Mario Nava, has opened the session from DG REFORM’s office in Athens to highlight the importance for the Commission to work hand in hand with the Member States.

The Expert Group on Public Administration and Governance was established on December 17th, 2021. It represents an important step for the Commission in its efforts to enhance cooperation with Member States in the area of Public Administration and Governance.

The Expert Group will be a platform to facilitate the dialogue between the European Commission and representatives of Member States. The objective is to identify common challenges for public administration and innovative approaches to address them. This platform for open dialogue will allow the Commission to create synergies and tailor its support instruments on Member States’ needs and challenges.

Representatives from the Member States included senior officials from national authorities responsible for horizontal issues, policy, coordination or modernisation in the area of public administration. Each Member State is responsible for appointing their representatives according to their national organisational set up. International organisations and research institutes attended the meeting as observers.

The Expert Group on Public Administration and Governance has been published in the Register of Commission expert groups and other similar entities

The Expert Group will meet on a quarterly basis. During the first meeting, discussions focused on the wider objectives, clarified the scope of the Expert Group, and included exchange of views on topics and themes that could be part of the work programme of the Expert Group for 2022.

The first meeting has included presentations from the Member States’ experts on specific topics in the area of Public Administration. More presentations will follow in the future.
