European Day of Languages

How much do you know about the EU’s 24 official languages? In the run-up to the European Day of Languages on 26 September, DG Translation (DGT) is launching a social media campaign featuring fun facts about each of them. You – or your family and friends – can also attend some of the numerous events and activities taking place across Europe and online, and order this year’s multilingual poster.

Celebrate EU languages on social media

We will kick off the EDL campaign publishing the new EDL poster on 1 September. Starting on 2 September, each day DGT will post fun facts about a different official language.

Language-related activities and events

This year’s celebrations coincide with the 20^th anniversary of the ‘Big Bang’ EU enlargement (adding 9 new official languages) and the publication of the Eurobarometer survey on Europeans and their languages. These will be the focus of online events organised by DG Education and Culture, DG Translation and DG Interpretation on 26 September:

• Europeans and their languages, 26 September, 12:00 – 13:00
• Virtual Café: Celebrating the 20^th anniversary of the 2004 EU enlargement (Knowledge Centre on Interpretation), 26 September, 15:00 – 16:45

Throughout September, numerous in-person and online events and activities are organised across the EU by DGT’s local language officers in cooperation with DG Education and Culture, DG Communication and the Commission’s Representations in the Member States.
